Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
