Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
