They're Doing across America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the US president started showing all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently research projected his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy is that if someone steals your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.

The obvious and direct fact that Christ of the gospels calls for a kind of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition to Trump arise in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects of American history.

We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected through connection to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest pretending the most negative about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both meekness and conviction, a mixture that serious American Christians ought to accept.
