US Military Operation on Caracas Stokes Concerns of Future Greenland Acquisition.

The recent US-led bombardment in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have renewed unease regarding Washington's designs on the Arctic territory. Members of the former president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the strategically important island in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Posts and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely hours following the commencement of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking White House aide, posted a symbolic image. The picture showed Greenland covered in the American flag, accompanied by single-word caption: "COMING."

This blatant threat to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the NATO alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Danish representatives.

"We are strong partners and should keep cooperate as such. US security is also Greenland’s and our security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to guarantee security in the North."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that Denmark had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, earmarking a substantial sum expressly for Northern and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we expect full recognition for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Political Moves and Strategic Interests

The tensions were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the president, stating it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has consistently unnerved transatlantic allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is considered critically strategic for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a notable media interview, the president refused to exclude the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during growing great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Local Opposition

In response to this persistent "drumbeat" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland issued a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's residents seek self-rule from Denmark, there is simultaneously little to no desire to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Military experts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a move. One policy director focusing in defence admitted she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
